I just got a new calico kitten and I’m not sure what to name it 
Palette (as in artist’s palette) is cute. I’ve always wanted to get a calico in order to name her that. Oh well, I love my tuxedo cats anyway.

The only way a male cat can have a calico coat is if it has what is called Klinefelter’s syndrome in humans - it has
two X-chromosomes and one Y. Since the Y-chromosome is the sex determinant, the cat will develop as male (with male secondary sexual characteristics), but will be sterile. However, one of the X-xhromosomes will be condensed by
a mechanism that involves the recognition of one X-chromosome by another.
So, if the cat is "heterozygous" for the coat-colour gene, it will have a calico coat.
The reason why I said that it is "unlikely" that the male calico kitten would die is because the analogous condition in humans is not lethal. Since I am not a vet, I really am not sure if it is lethal in cats.
