Cat for a college student?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: care cat health pet

I’m a first year art student at college, I’m living in an apartment, which allows pets, and have two roommates who are used to living with animals. I’m considering getting a pet, but I really, really want to think it through before I do anything.
I have been considering a rabbit, but after posting another question the idea of a cat came up.
I would want an adult, at least 2 years old maybe older, from a shelter.
But, of course I need to think this through, I know I can afford food, litter stuff, yearly checkups etc. but I’m worried about if it gets sick, there is pet health insurance which maybe an option.
I also need to take into account the fact that I will be going home in the summer and may not be back in the same apartment next year.
At home I have my beloved dog (who would be with me, except that he needs way more attention then I can give him as a student), and 2 cats… so if I was to adopt a cat it would have to get along with those 3 (not that they get along great, but they don’t kill each other)
I dunno, does it sound like I could take care of a cat as a student?
Yes, I did post a similar question yesterday, but then I wanted more general information, now I would like information more specific to owning a cat, and it’s not that I doubt myself as a pet owner but the last thing I want to do is get an animal give it love and a home then have to give it up again because I didn’t think things through

You asked this yesterday and the answer is still yes.

Unless you’re mentally incapacitated or something. Then yes you would very well be able to take care of a cat. Lots of students have cats as pets if you doubt yourself this much just dont get one

Neighbor cat poop in yard 4 yrs now.My kids run in it. Neighbor knows don’t care. HELP!?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: care cat health pet

I have seen this cat in my yard, chased it off…done everything, have spent many dollars on products, gadgets….nothing works! Neighbor knows…told her and she ripped my head off. She said the cat craps all over her kitchen counters and can’t keep it in the house for the safethy of her daughter. But when I tell her my daughter’s health is at risk…she could care less. I can’t imagine harming the cat … not its fault … I blame the owner…I have tried everything possible….nothing has worksed…cat is old…can’t hear…probably can’t smell either…nothing works. It’s hopeless and seems so unfair…to me…people like this should not have pets!!! HELP…for my kids’ sake!

Perhaps try using pine cones to cover the ‘available’ soil?

She does not deserve the cat since she has no idea what she is doing with it at all. God alone knows how she raises the poor kid, I shudder to think!

Notify the owner that the cat has been a nuisance for quite some time and poses a huge health risk for your kids, and she has only been unhelpful and abusive in this matter, you have no option but to have the cat removed. Since at that age chances of finding a home are so slim, you may want to try and find a shelter with a no-kill policy.

Poor cat, what did the poor thing do to deserve such a dreadful owner?

If my coworker swats me on the butt and I swat her back, but I dislocate her hip in the swatting, can I be…?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: care cat health pet

…held liable for that?

And unlike many of my questions, this actually happened. She said she felt my hand on her ass for a half an hour and she thought I dislocated her hip.

It’s not my fault she’s got a gimpy hip, is it? And she swatted me first!

As I sees it, it’s her fault.

She wasn’t quick enough with the "safe" word.

I just got a cat from a family member that could not longer take care of………….?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: care cat health pet

The cat is 18 years old and has been neglected as far as love and affection. She is arthritic and sleeps all the time but she does eat, drink and use the litter box. I have devoted a whole bedroom to this cat and give her alot of petting and affection every time I go into that room which she really likes. She won’t go any farther than just outside the bedroom and into the hallway a little bit. I have taken her to the vet for a check up and shots, etc. The vet says she is just an "old gramma kitty" but in relatively good health for her age.

My question is - how long do cats generally live? She is already 18 for pete sake. When does there come a time that you put a cat down?

Yes that is old for a cat but I know of a cat that lived to 25 years old. First of all, I want to say that it is very humane of you to have taken the cat in the first place. Most people would want a kitten. I think that as long as you have taken her to the vet and the vet said that she was healthy for her age then just continue to care for her. I’m sure that when you show her affection she gets very passionate about it since she didn’t get affection at her other home. If she gets sick in any way that can’t be easily treated then I would put her down rather than spend alot of money and put her through surgery or whatever. I have one suggestion that you may already be doing. A cat that old needs to be put on good cat food for older cats. I suggest w/d or Iams. You can get it at most pet stores or vet clinics. It is a little expensive but may help her live a little longer. Good Luck with Gramma Kitty!

What can I do/ I’m at my wits’ end? my bf DENIES our cat is a health risk to baby (and us)?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: care cat health pet

okay i posted last night but i still am racking my brain. i cant let go of this worry and i think i have valid reasons. we have a 4-month-old daughter. we also have a cat. the cat is indoor but since about a year and a half ago has had on again off again worms—tape worms. anyways we’ve taken her to the vet before, they’d treat her, but lately we havent and bam she has them again.
so here’s where I’m going crazy;
My boyfriend wont "let’ me take her to the vet. he says shes "his’ cat bc he got her from his mother’s who has had her for several yrs. I dont care about that but it bothers me he wont take her himself or let me. he claims that he can treat her at home. well all he gives her is a cheap delfleaing treatment and otc worm pill and it doesnt work.
his mom came over today. she acts like this cat is a person. I told her my concerns about the cat giving it to our 4-month-old baby girl, who I am more concerned about. she says "no its not contagious’ well Ive looked SO much stuff on it, and so many articles say it is! then I called an pediatric advice nurse and a vet tech, and BOTH said though unlikely, it can be spread. i am worried bc the cat is around the baby a lot, i try to keep ehr away but its a small apartment. anyhow, my bf refuses to listen to me. He falt out denies its a health risk. His mom denies it. How can they both be right, and everybody else—including a vet tech and advice nurse—be wrong?
I am probably going to take the cat to the vet tomorrow without even telling him. But it makes me so mad that i have to do that. and i’m also going to make an appointment with my baby’s pedi to be tested through stool sample just so I can have peace of mind.
I am livid that he denies facts as well as his stupid animal freak mother. She claims she’s equiavalant to a vet just bc she spent years training horses as a HOBBY not a profession.
I’m also going to have my pedi write him a note, or leave him a message stating it IS transmissble from cats to humans, particularly children (which I’m assuming includes young infants)
how would you feel if this was your baby? what would you do? am i over-reacting?
and why wont he listen to me?

I almost want to leave him bc of this and stay at my parents’ house, but over there is no haven either bc my dad smokes inside the house and wont go outside for anyone, not even my baby. and they too have pets—but ive never heard of them having worms.
and i know the otc stuff isnt working bc it keeps coming back like every few weeks
and i know the otc stuff isnt working bc it keeps coming back like every few weeks
please help any moms out there please!

I agree with artie lange fan. If you constantly have tapeworm then there is a flea problem. What you need to do is get some seven dust or dust from your vet that kills fleas, vacuum really well. and do this a couple of times. You must get EVERYWHERE. Please do not waist your money on flea bombs, they do not get everywhere and stink up the house. Also you must wash ALL linens and clothes. You also need to get your pet on Frontline (works better than Advantage). Then you need to get your cat on a wormer for tapeworms (called Cestex) which is ~$2 a pill and works in 2 doses. Once the fleas are gone then so will the tapeworms.

BTW, Fleas are more of a health hazard than are tapeworms. Fleas suck blood, which can lead to anemia. Tapeworms only use some of your digesta as nutrition. Both are still very gross.

Something about the obama health care plan you might not know about.?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: care cat health pet

Did you know that under the obama health care plan that just went through the house one of the requirements of that plan is for you to get an fda class 2 implantable device put in your arm.In the bill under class 2(paragraph 1,section b)this is a requirement to have this insurance plan. Also on page 1004 of the bill describes what data is to be on this device. Some things are:claims data, patient survey info, health and medical records and any other data that is deemed appropriate by the secretary.Just who is this secretary and just what information do they deem appropriate to be on this chip. This is the chip that is currently used in animals like dogs ,cats and other pets,so is that what the american people are thought of by our government, animals or maybe like cattle to be rounded up.When I read this I was in disbelief for a few minutes because this is the stuff right out of revelations and the new world order conspiracies, and it’s in this bill I’ve seen it.According to several other websites, these chips are operated by radio frequencies which means that if they wanted, the government could track you anywhere in the world if you have one of these devices implanted in you.I’m not the smartest person in the world, but this sounds like the road to government slavery to me.Do not trust this government we have now because they are set on destroying this country and all that reside in it.Please don’t take my word on this,do the research and read the health care bill for yourself,it’s in there. How do you feel about what our own government is trying to do to us because I am sitting here right now in total disgust about this.
According to the bill, class 3 devices are like heart valves and other medical treatments.A class 2 device is a radio frequency transponder that is implanted into someone for the purpose of storing medical data
According to some that answered,if there is nothing to this then why is there on page 1004 of the bill a section describing what data is to be stored on these implantable chips, you can’t store data on a heart valve or artificial heart now can you.For all who are looking for links just go to congress.com,you should be able to find some links to the health care bill.

This bill is dangerous, and there is plenty in that bill to fear. It IS a power grab pure and simple.

What about the part where the government can come into your home and dictate how you raise your children? Children can be removed from your home if the government deems that you are not raising them to their satisfaction?

I also read this bill and it is a double edged sword.
