What are cats doing when they press on another cat’s stomach?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat

I think it’s similar to what cat’s do to people sometimes, but they do it to the stomach of other cats. What does it mean?

This procedure is actually a reminder of kitten hood. From the age of three weeks until weaning kittens spend a lot of their time kneading and purring around their mothers milk supplying nipples.

Kittens learn very quickly that the movement of their paws on either side of the nipple stimulates and increases the milk flow.

A soft and warm or comfortable area, whether it be our laps or the favorite cushion on the couch seems to bring out this kittenish behavior in cats.

When does cat calming collar start taking effect, and does it actually work?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat

I bought a calming collar for my 6 mo cat. I was wondering when does it kick in? and if it actually calms the cat down enough? (less meowing, less anxiety. etc)

The hormone bases collars can take between 3-7 days for full effect and will not change the behavior in all pets. Most vets will recommend a combination effort of one of the plug in dispersers, collar or medication. I worked at a vet clinic where we kept a plug in hooked up at all times in the cat boarding room and it would usually help settle most cat’s within a couple days, but some never did. Kittens are a story all their own though and many of the behavior issues you are experiencing many be age related, not stress or anxiety. Best of luck to you!

How often at a shelter do you find a cat without cat flu?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat

Mum says she would never adopt a cat with cat flu? Most cats at the shelter would have cat flu if I’m not mistaken as they spend heaps of time with other cats, epecially when there with penned with 7 other different cats

It would be virtually impossible to find a shelter cat the didn’t have cat flu? Right or Wrong?
Cats are vacciented at our shelters for cat flu and other disease, but although does reduce the chances of a cat getting sick, does not guarantee the cat will not get sick.

I adopted 2 of my cats at the humane society. The one I adoted last year had an URI and turns out she has Feline Herpes Virus. The one I adopted in July had an URI but now she’s pretty much in good health. So, I think it depends on the cat’s immune system.

I recently purchased a cat from Russia and have been having problems?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat

I bought a cat from Russia and now I am having a communication problem. I guess it only speaks Russian because whenever I ask it if its hungry it doesn’t reply. I asked my other cats to talk to it but they don’t know Russian either. Does anybody know where I can find local Russian cat translators? I don’t know what this cat needs and the language barrier is putting distress throughout my family of cats.
I am a 23 year old dude with a cat family and nobody seems to take this problem seriously. This language barrier is causing turmoil within my kitty family.

The Department of Homeland Security has cats from all over the world in place to help in situations such as yours. Because terrorists can look like anything or anybody, they and the Immigration and Naturalization Dept must be ready with Translator Cats(dogs are available). These cats are from Turkey(Turkish Vans), Iran(Persians), Tibet(Himilayans),
Russia(Russian Blues), and other countries such a Singapore(Singapura) and even Britain(British Blues) for example.
Being that your cat is Russian, however, they may want to assure that he has the proper paperwork in order, or they may try to deport him, as often happens. You don’t say where you are from, but if you are close to Brighton Beach in NJ(?) I believe there is a large Russian population that can help translate(this according to the Sopranos). They may exact a large price for the service…
I would just place a Black Russian or White Russian close by while you teach him American Sign Language, if he doesn’t like the Vodka, you drink it and give him tuna and water…
DA?

How can I add a cat to a family of five dogs?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat

We have five outside dogs, and want an inside/outside cat. Does anyone have suggestions on how to get a new cat used to five dogs? Should we get an adult cat or kitten? For any of you who have both cats and dogs, what is the cat to dog ratio and how did you make it work without the dogs killing the cat?

I have four dogs and a cat…and life is peaceful. None of the dogs bother the cat. I would say get a young cat verse an adult cat. Adult cats are stuck in their ways. But my cat is indoor only.

How can I keep my outside cat off my car?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat

I live on a small farm. It is nice to have a few cats for the barn. 2 of my cats stay off of the cars, and I have never had any problems with them. My sister-in-laws Aunt gave me a cat because she could not keep her anymore. Ever since I have cat tracks all over my car.. I can’t stand it any more.

OK cats are predatory animals, to do this they need to be high so they can see everything that is happening around them. your cat is doing nothing wrong in his or her mind and if it is over 8 months old it is very unlike that it ever change but one thing you can do is to make a platform with a latter of some sort that is about the same height or a little taller than your car. you can look it up on the web as a cat house but sadly you will have to search as cat house will bring other results as well sorry about those maybe cat house plans would be better

What precautions should I take before getting a 3rd cat?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat

I have 2 healthy indoor cats. I want to get a 3rd cat from a shelter.

1. Which vaccinations should I give my current cats before getting the new cat?

2. How long should I wait after vaccinating my current cats before getting the new cat?

3. Should I test the cat TWICE for feline leukemia before I introduce it to my other cats? Or is ONE test good enough? I ask because if the new cat recently caught leukemia, it will not show up on the test yet.

It can depend on the shelter. Most pets put up for adoption have had the necessary tests to rule out contagious, fatal diseases they might have come in with. So just check that out.

You do not need to re-vaccinate your current cats. You will want to keep the new one separate for a while. Go to: http://www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe’s article titled "Cat to Cat Introductions" for great instructions about making the introduction. She also has an article titled "Vaccinations" which you should read to allay any issues you may have about the new cat bringing in "diseases" which may affect your other cats. Be aware that it is VERY common for a shelter cat to have an upper respiratory infection (airbourne and difficult to control in shelters) when you bring it home.

So keep the cats separate until you are sure that is cleared up or not going to develop. Aside from the viral infection stress adds a lot to getting the illness. The new cat and your cat will be under some stress until they have made their adjustment to one another.

You can also go to Dr. Hovfe’s site: http://spiritessence.com and read about using them with cats. Dr. Hovfe has a combination of essences called "New Beginnings". I feel a $20 bottle of that (mailed to you from CO) is a great investment to make when introducing a new cat to an established household.

I’m thinking of getting a cat. How can I avoid stinky cat smell and scratched up sofas?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat

I have seen two mice in my apt over the past week. I’m thinking of getting a cat to help with the problem. My friend has a cat and her house always reeks of stinky litter box and cat hairs all over the furniture. Also I have leather sofas. I do not want the cat to scratch p my furniture. How can I get a cat and not have to deal with more problems than I already have. Also I worry about cat food possibly attracting more vermin. Can anyone give me any suggestions?

Cats are a bit of work. So if you really don’t feel like taking care of another life, please don’t bother. Just lay some lettuce wedges down (lettuce has a lot of water in the leaves, a mouse eats enough of this and they drown) or poison pellets, or even the plug in rodent repellent. There are enough homeless and uncared for cats out there.

But if you are up to the challenge then here are some tips that have helped me.

First off stinky litter box problems can be solved by several methods.

1. find a corner of your home that you do not always frequent like the abandoned corner of your bathroom, or the space next to a closet door. Mine is next to the "coat closet" that we never use. It is in the corner of the living room and behind a whimsical rocking chair.

2. We use Fresh step lavender litter so every time they use it it releases lavender scent rather than the Stinky Smell.

3. If the smell does make an appearance and you have changed the litter religiously then simply add a little baking powder. Weird yes, but it helps knock the smell out.

Cat food drawing in more rodents, not a problem, buy one of those plastic food storage bins with a secure lid and place the cat food in there.
When it is time to feed the little thing just give it a single serving and let them eat it. place it somewhere high up. Allow the cat access to possibly a side counter, or a end table. But feed the cat twice a day, and clean up the mess after the cat is done. same as you would with your own dishes.

Scratching the furniture. Yeah that can get annoying my first cat killed my mothers couch when I was 8 years old. So Since then we tried the squirt bottle filled with water, but guess what you will not be there 24/7 to stop such behavior. Then we tried the whole claw caps thing, but some cats are really damn smart. Mine are, they got the caps off. I still don’t know how. You can always go to the final resort of de-clawing your cat but if your cat is going outside then how could it defend itself? the answer is in one of two options.

Getting rid of the front set only as that is the set they will rip up your furniture, but leaving them with the back set so if they get outside they will have a defense system still.

Or

You can get them a tendonectomy. This is where the cat still has it’s claws but they cannot extend the claws to rip up your leather. So the claws still grow, but you just trip them. My cats have this, and my NEW sofa still looks NEW 2 years later.

the cat hairs, well groom your cat, look for a cat that has short hair, that is first. Brush them, or take them to a groomer. they need a bath, a good rub down, and there will be less hair. Then buy yourself a tape brush thing, or the pledge hair remover. it is simple enough.
