will the SPCA accept a bag of cat/kitten food that has been opened?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat and kitten

My cat is 2 and hes turned away two types of cat food, since he was a kitten then an adult, can i bring it to the spca or will they not accept it because its been opened?

Usually not because they have no way to tell if it was tampered with. While you have good intentions, someone else might put posion in an open bag and drop it off. My rescue actually told me of a case like this.

Call and ask.

Which is the best breed for a new cat/kitten owner?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat and kitten

I will be looking for a kitten/cat one that would be good for people who can’t be in for the day like one that can be look after around 3pm.

just a normal domestic short hair. they don’t require as much maintenance as long hairs, and they shed a lot less. Just be sure to leave him some food, water, and lots of toys when you’re out. I also leave the radio on for my cat.

How much does it cost to adopt a cat/kitten from a shelter?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat and kitten

I am thinking of adding a furry family member this Christmas. I am not sure whether I want an adult cat or a kitten but I am also on a budget this year. How much does it usually cost to adopt an animal from a shelter? I definitely want to adopt from a shelter because there are so many needy animals in shelters that just need a good home and a loving family.

At our shelter its $20 and $50 if they are spayed/neutered. You still have to take them in for shots . Have you checked out Craig’s List yet? Those animals need homes really bad because of their irresponsible owners who don’t have time, new job, new baby, etc…. Alot of those animals are free or there’s a small rehoming fee. Also, check the vets offices in your area-they always have flyers trying to find homes for animals and don’t forget to check your newspaper. I always see ads for free animals. You’re doing a wonderful thing, best of luck!!

I am feeding my cat kitten food along with wet food would a vitamin supplement be beneficial?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat and kitten

My cat just had 6 kittens on Monday. Just wanted to make sure she has all the right nutrients

Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It’s completely species inappropriate.

All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don’t need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol’ house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats.

So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.

Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.

Overall, wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats.

I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of 2 to 4 different brands of canned foods that your cat enjoys. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cat’s digestive system won’t be so sensitive and you won’t have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. You will have a nice variety to choose from instead.

Canned foods I recommend you consider for your rotation:

How do you introduce a kitten to a kitten or a cat to a kitten ?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat and kitten

You know… Just in case my father buys another cat/kitten. Serious answer please or I will report your answer.

Cats need to be properly introduced to the new home, the new humans, and the existing cats if they are to get along well and not have problems.

Here’s how we introduce newcomers to our gang:

Cats need to be introduced very slowly.

First of all, we do not allow a new cat to have any contact with our other cats until a vet has given the new cat a clean bill of health. This includes tests for such things as FIP and Feline Leukemia.

Cats can be successfully introduced to each other regardless of their ages or sexes.

We have successfully added adult cats to our family containing both young and old cats as well as introducing very young kittens to the other cats.

It has to be done slowly. If you simply put them together, you will have behavioral problems the vast majority of times.

The new cat has to be given time to get used to you and the new environment - don’t try to introduce the new cat to the new home, to you, and to the other cats all at once. Do it in stages.

Also, the existing cat has to get used to the smell of the new cat.

We introduce cats by keeping the new cat in the back room for up to a month. My office is there as is my wife’s sewing table. There is a sofa and bookshelves.

We spend a lot of time with the new cat to get them used to us, the new environment and the new smells.

After they accept us with no problems, we put a screen door on the back room door frame and let everyone see each other for a week or so.

It may take a lot less time than a month to get to this point but we just take it slow and easy.

Once we judge it safe to do so, we let the new cats out into the house and chaperon the first encounters.

We’ve only ever had one problem introducing cats like this and that problem was resolved in a couple of weeks.

We’ve had 26 cats over the past 22 years and many of them were adults - 12 and older - when they joined our family.

We’ve also introduced several kittens, ranging from ages of 7 weeks to 4 or 5 months, to the rest of the crew with no problems.

You have to take it slow.

If you can’t put up a screen door, perhaps two baby gates, stacked one on top of the other, will close off the door but still allow the cats to see each other.

If you can’t use a screen door or baby gates, try letting the existing cat into the room with the new cat for a few minutes while you chaperon.

If things get bad, take the cat out of the room.

You just have to introduce cats slowly

There are cats who could be thrown together and become pals but they are few and far between.

How long did it take your kitten/cat to get used to the cat flap ?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat and kitten

We had a cat flap installed last week so my six month old kitten had the choice of staying in or going out (he has been neutured and micro chipped). Saturday, I pushed him through both ways so he could get used to it, after a while he was using it by himself. However, yesterday he just meowed at it and only went outside when I did through opening the door and then this morning before I came to work, he was again, meowing at it and patting it very gently, it has a magnetic catch at the bottom and really he should push it with his head rather than tap with his paw. Will he get used to it eventually, I don’t want him to feel trapped.

I had the same problem with one of my cats. Three of them just started using it. Then I got a kitten. She would watch them leave and look so bewildered! I stood outside the flap and held it up for her to go out and then to come back in. Then she started pawing at it on her own and I would go outside and call her. Finally, she figures out that she had to push on it. It took her a good week to master the flap without my help. Since she could get inside easier than outside, it wasn’t to bad.

is a 400 square feet apartment too small for a cat/kitten to live in?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat and kitten

i have a small cat, a young kitten and live in an apartment that is less than 400 square feet. can the cat live in such small space?

i dont like the fact that it always try to hide, so i keep it from going into the bathroom or laundry room or balcony. so it only has 3 rooms to roam which is bedroom, living and kitchen. i block off areas that it can hide such as behind refridgerator and under the bed. can it survive?

Yep,
For him to hide,Get a cardboard box,and cut a hole in the side,it is warm,dark,and every thing.Add blankets,some toys,and a string taped
from the top or something.
:) I hope he will like that, show him to go in,sit him in,or
throw a treat in there.
YOUR WELCOME!!
