What premium canned cat food is best for my cat?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat food

It seems that my cat has been getting soft stools off and on for awhile now, but also gets normal ones too. So I guess i’m going to stick to one brand of premium wet food and stay away from store bought and human food treats. So since there are a ton of brands out there, what ones could you guys recommend that would be best for my kittie’s sensitive digestive system? By premium, I mean Innova, California Natural, etc.
I did take my cat to her vet, and she gave her medicine. But she told me to feed her soft food only.

There could be a reason for your cat’s soft stools besides food. Some of the problems that can result in soft stools are infection with Coccidia or Giardia, both protozoal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

You should really bring the cat to the vet to rule out the many non-food reasons for your cat’s soft stools.

There are really a lot of premium options for you out there. You are probably going to need to experiment to see which foods agree with your cat though your experiment will prove inconclusive if the issue is not the food at all…

Some of the foods I feed my cats are Innova EVO both the regular one, the duck, and the venison; Wellness - all the varieties except the one with lobster but most frequently either the chicken, turkey, or chicken and herring; Natural Balance Ultra and the chicken and liver pate, a few of the Merrick’s varieities and others.

Since your cat may simply have an intolerance to grain any other these grain-free (some of the Natural Balance have a little rice) may be the answer. I suggest that you not only choose a grain-free food but you try only one protein source at a time for at least a week since it could be that too.

You could start with only Wellness chicken for a week or so and if all goes well you’ll know it isn’t chicken, and so on.

Or you could begin with one of the Natural Balance limited ingredient foods. These are foods that contain only one unusual protein source such as duck. The idea is that some cats may have developed a sensitivity to some proteins like chicken or beef from over-exposure to them.

Aside from that, you could try your cat on a raw diet. These can be very beneficial to cats with bowel problems. Google "raw diet cat IBD" to start.

But really you should start with a vet visit. You don’t want to spend months experimenting with different foods and find out the poor kitty has had Coccidia all along.

How long is bagged cat food fresh until?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat food

I am just wondering how long after I open my cats food will it go stale or bad? My cat seems to eat the fresh food faster and more readily than after the bag has been opened a week or 2. It does have a ziploc type seal so the air stays out, but will it still go rancid? She eats the Whiskas brand.

If you look very closely there is an experation date on cat food these days, this will tell you how long it is safe to feed the food.

I have also experienced an animal not wanting to eat from a bag that was opened a month ago. so i switched and bought smaller quanities at a time and now put the food into an air tights plastic container for storage.

Also… cats are very picky eaters so it IS hard, BUT dont spoil it to much or it will get bored of everything.

What the best dry cat food in the United States?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat food

Please don’t say Science Diet or any other store brand food. Apparently these aren’t all that good for your cat. Has anyone tried Chicken Soup for the Catlovers Soul with their cats or any other high quality food?

yes Science Diet is TERRIBLE stuff - did you know they PAID for vet endorsement??
Vets actually receive very little or NO education in terms of food brands and ingredients so when a Science Diet rep approaches them to sell the food, they often do it - Why do vets recommend the food?? BECAUSE THEY MAKE MONEY SELLING IT!!!!!!!!!!
(anyone who isnt familiar with food and ingredients should learn about this and will see this food is CRAP - over priced becuase of how they market it, but still CRAP)

I was unfamilair with the food you named (I am in Canada) so looked it up
looked very good to me,
NO by-products
NO BHT, BHA
NO SOY

chicken and turkey - good - gentle on the tummy
I didnt see if it said "human grade meat"

Felidae, and Wellness are other goods one I know of in the US
I wouldnt recomend anything less than NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE (widely available but not human grade meat)

*** ADDITIONAL NOTE*** - I am sure you know but this is for other readers sake - IAMS used to be good, but Proctor and Gamble bought out this company (and Eukanuba) years ago, and now both are not good.. PLUS linked to cruelty - www.iamscruelty.com

What brand of cat food do you feed your cat? Do you use dry or wet?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat food

I have 3 cats and I want to feed them the best cat food possible so that they will stay healthy and live a long life. Any ideas as to what is the best brand I should feed my cats. Thank-you for your suggestions.

When looking at buying food, buy food with no by-products in it and with little or no grains in it. Feed a bit of dry and a bit of wet, following the directions on the labels. If you feed a high-quality diet found in pet stores, it is supposed to keep the urine at a good pH level, so kitty won’t get crystals. Don’t buy grocery store cat food, it is filled with by-products and grain fillers.

Innova EVO is supposed to be really good. Nutro’s Natural Choice is supposed to be better than supermarket brands because it has no by-products, but it contains corn, so it’s not the best you can buy.

I have done so much research on this subject since adopting my cat in August. It is so confusing. Some say an only canned food diet is bad for teeth, some say dry food will help with their teeth, others say it won’t. Others say an only canned diet is best. So confusing, so I feed a bit of both. I’ve read that vets have little or no training in cat nutrition, and what they do learn is sponsered by food providers that use by-products and cheap grain fillers.

What is the healthiest canned cat food you can get from a regular grocery store?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat food

I know you can get great gourmet ones from a pet store, but if I were to just walk in Publix or any grocery store, what kind of cat food is the best?
I have EVO for my cat, but the other day it was too late to go to the pet store, so I went to the grocery store and got her Fancy Feast and she LOVED it… is it the healthiest best one for a cat to eat?

She loves Fancy Feast cause it’s junk food.. It’s probably the best choice out of the grocery store stuff, but, picking a best grocery store food is like picking the less of two evils. If I was absolutely out of food and the regular store was closed, I’d maybe get fancy feast.. But, they’d be back on Evo as soon as the store that sold it was open..
http://www.petco.com/product/10200/Friskies-Fancy-Feast-Grilled-Gourmet-Cat-Food.aspx#description
There’s some Fancy Feast ingredient information.. All of it has wheat gluten in it, which was part of the recall not too long ago. The ash level is just barely within healthy levels and none of their cans state how much magnesium is in it.. Both of those things can cause your cat to have kidney disease later and develop urinary crystals.
Purina One’s ash and magnesium levels are double what’s recommended even in the food they claim is for urinary health.
Iams is halfway decent, ash and magnesium just barely within range, but, most of their flavors are currently recalled.

What are the best brands of indoor cat food?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat food

I am considering getting a cat this summer. I would be getting a siberian kitten about 10 weeks old. I had a puppy and fed her the best foods (Blue Buffalo) and now I want to give my cat the best food. I would like a brand that has food adequate for indoor cats and that has both a wet and dry formula. I heard that Felidae, Nutro, Natural Balance and Solid Gold were good brands. I prefer something that is sold in stores. Thanks!
I thought it mattered since outdoor cats hunt and…..wait….I think you’re right!!!

Hi
Why would you possibly think that it matters whether a cat is an indoor cat or indoor outdoor or outdoor cat? Cats ae carnivores and cats of all ages activity levels body types and breeds need exactly the same thing
Please learn about feline nutrition

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrediant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don’t use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn’t have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.
THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPOODUCTS NO MEAL
Cats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters
Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food.
Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4a.php

Please read about cat nutrition.

Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spring04/Perhach/PetFood/Vets.htm
