What is it like for a cat with feline leukemia to die? Is it super painful?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: feline leukemia

Do they cry a lot, or do they go fairly peacefully? If you want to know more about my story, check my last 2 questions.
Sorry, I didnt realize that my profile was private. I changed it. and as for the rude answer.. no I dont know whether it is painful or not, how would I know if I havent experienced this before? And it is nothing like human leukemia from what ive read!

Yes, they die VERY painfully, just like a human with leukemia. Of course it’s painful. I will look at your last two questions, but I cannot believe you wouldn’t know this. If your feline is in this condition and is in pain, you should do the right thing for the poor animal, and take him/her to your vet and have your pet put down. It’s the kindest thing you could ever do. When I was a child I had a male Siamese who had a kidney infection and my parents wouldn’t spend the money to put him to sleep, and he died very painfully.

How long does it take to dedect feline leukemia and FIV in an 8 week old kitten?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: feline leukemia

I am doing a snap test on a stray kitten I have taken in but I am wondering how accurate the results would be??? I dont know if she has come into contact with these, but if she did, how long since the contact until I can get an accurate test result back?
What is FIP?

You can get a "false positive" or a "false negative" on a young kitten. I think the negative is rarer. Sometimes it’s good to test again when the kitten is a little older.

Many shelters now do the testing on very young kittens as part of their health checks. I have never heard of one "returned" because of coming down with either disease later on.

FIP is something we can’t test for and it is a real tragedy when a cat or kitten develops that.

Will my older cats contract feline leukemia from a new kitten?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: feline leukemia

I had a kitten for about one week until I found out he had feline leukemia and had to put him down. In that week the kitten lived with my two older cats who are about 2 years old. They used the same litter boxes, licked each other, and played around with each other, although they never came in contact with blood or had any sexual contact. Is it likely that my two older cats will contract this disease?

Yes, it is possible.

You need to have your older cats tested for the disease. You need to wash any food and water bowls with bleach and scrub the litter pan with bleach as well. Leukemia comes from saliva, blood, and sexual excretions. The easiest way they get it is eating out of the same bowl and grooming each other. You need to have your cats tested. But you might want to ask a vet about the incubation time. I am not sure how long it takes after the cat comes in contact with the disease for the cat to test positive for it. So ask a vet and they can tell you when you should have the older cats tested.

What are the symptoms of feline leukemia?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: feline leukemia

Are there any common symptoms to know if your cat is infected? Is there a cure?

Thank you!

There are some symptoms that may occur depending on the severity of the disease. Lethargy, anemia, diarrhea or constipation, lack of appetite. Unfortunately there is no cure nor an exact way to determine how long the cat will live for. On the streets, it may not last a year if around other cats since the disease brings their immune systems effectiveness down. However, an indoor cat can live a fairly long, normal & happy life alone or with other FLV+ cats. Leukemia is quite easy to catch from feline to feline, so it’s always best to keep separated or have no other cats at all. Take your cat to the vet soon, you’ll do it some good.

Is there any where you can get a cat tested for Feline Leukemia for free (it’s a stray)?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: feline leukemia

4(maybe more) kittens and a mom.
They live across the busy street we live on and we want to find them homes but we have a cat so we want to make sure they don’t have Feline Leukemia or anything are cat could get!
Any ideas???
Thanks!

There are programs set up especially for people who can’t afford medical care for their pets. It would be low cost or no cost depending on the facility.

It’s usually shelters and humane societies that run these programs. I would suggest you look in your phone book for any animal organization that might offer these services.
