WHat are some good toys for cats?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: interactive cat toys

I have 8 outside cats (all fixed and UTD on shots) and I have always tried to figure out what kind of toys to get them. Since they’re outside I can’t get them the same interactive toys that I get my inside cats like thing in a bag, mouse house, etc. Because if they get rained on they’ll be ruined.

Any ideas for toys that I could get my outside cats? They love to play and what I’m doing right now is taking the inside toys out there and letting them play with them for a while and then bringing the toys back in but I’d really like to find some cool toys that I can just leave out there for them and won’t get ruined when it rains.

Any ideas? Money’s no object if it means them being happy.

Anything with catnip. and small balls, if its playful. they seem to like lasers a lot too xP.
You don’t really need to spend a lot of money, small toy mice with catnip, paper balls. buying something overly expensive and realizing it doesn’t like it would suck. make sure to buy scratching poles!

Friendly, interactive, fun pet?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: interactive cat toys

Does anyone here know of a friendly, interactive, fun pet that is good around kids age 10-12 and adults? No dogs or cats just a small inexpensive pet that can be bought and set up with a cage, food, and (optional) toys for 50 dollars or less? Best answer will get 10 awesome points!

Guinea pigs or rabbits if you have access to outdoors
Hamster or rats if indoor animals.
Rats are highly social pets and love to spend time with their owners down side is they generally only live for 3 years.
Hamsters, Rabbits and Guinea Pigs will also be very social as long as you start handling them from a young age.
Whatever pet you et mak sure you do your homeowrk first because they have special dietary needs eg Guinea pigs must have fresh grass and Vit C daily.

What to get to prepare for a young Aussie Shep/ Border Collie to come home?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: interactive cat toys

I’m getting mixed messages about some toys etc. to get for our new dog. She is coming home from the humane society next week after getting fixed and is said to be approx. 6 months old. She has boundless energy, has one blue eye and one brown, is so adorable and interactive with the environment.

I’ve read that rawhide bones are a bad idea because the puppy might break pieces off and choke. Is this true? Is a nyla bone okay?

What other essentials should we get to help make her comfortable with the family? Do you think she would like her own dog bed? What kind?
I’ve heard that crate training is good but I don’t think I want to do that. So I’m going to try the puppy training pads.

Are wire bristle brushes ok or should we go with plastic for a brush? She has thick longish hair which feels slightly coarse.
I got a nylon collar and leash to start getting her used to that.

We have two cats. I’m moving their food and water to the corner counter. Can I expect her to chase and chew at them?

Thank you for any advice!

You know it is trial and error. Some of my shelties liked balls and squeaky toys some like soft toys, some like tug toys. I do allow my dogs raw hides, some people don’t, I do supervise a puppy if she has one. My dogs don’t eat my furniture, so I am glad to give them a rawhide to eat. I have a vast assortment of doggie beds and blankets, some get used and some don’t, I have not figured out the logic to why they like some and why they don’t like others. They tend to sleep on pillows more in the winter months. I have baskets full of dog combs and brushes. My husband likes the furminator, I like the pet styler, but you can’t buy the pet styler anymore. You might consider a grooming spray with coconut oil. It is more likely that the cats will put the puppy in her place, but step in if anyone gets too rough. Puppy pads won’t work with a puppy that large, I would get the crate and take the puppy outside. I only use the crate for potty training, and then I break it down and store it for the next puppy. I find the crate the fastest method to potty train. I use a crate* to potty train with, but only for potty training and then I break it down and store it. I put blankets and a small food and water dish in the crate. Dogs don’t potty where they eat and sleep. When they are first little, I only expect them to hold their potty for 4 hours, and then 6 hours, then 8 hours and so on. So when they are first little, I set a timer or alarm clock to wake myself up at night to take them *out. I only allow my puppy in the bedroom* or the living room, only one room at a time. They have to graduate to more space. If I allow them to have full run of the house, it will overwhelm them. I take them out the same door each time. I tie a dinner bell to the door handle. Do not use a jingle bell as they could get their toe caught in it. So when they are little, I ring the bell for them, and then open the door to go *outside to potty. When they get bigger, I take their paw and whack the bell and open the door to go potty. Eventually getting to the place where the puppy will ring the bell and let me know when they need to go potty. Dogs want to please you, so it is your job to let them know what behaviors please you and what doesn’t. So when my puppy goes potty, I give her a treat*, and clap, and make a fuss and praise her. So she learns that going potty outside makes me happy. If she has an accident, make a disgust sound like “tsst” and take her out right away. I never yell* or spank* my puppies. Take them out when they first wake up, after they eat or drink, before nap, finish romping, when their activities change, or when they are sniffing around. Some puppies go pee right away, but may not go poop until 10 minutes later, so wait for the poop. I have a little play time here, because sometimes I think they are done, and they are not. Puppies train at their own pace. While I may have a puppy that hasn’t had an accident in several weeks, I don’t let my guard down. I don’t expect my puppies to be "fully potty trained" until one-year-old. If they have a setback, shake it off, and start over. I only have my puppies in the crate when I am not watching them. When I am sleeping, cooking, ironing, doing chores, basically when I am not watching her. All other times, she is out of the crate practicing being a "big girl." This is the time I train her how to behave in the house. So we are practicing "no barking", ‘no biting", "no jumping", and "don’t eat the furniture." I also have to practice "playing inside" so she doesn’t knock over things. You must keep the puppy in sight when they are little because they don’t know the difference between newspaper and carpet, and you don’t want them sneaking off and getting into trouble. Some puppies can sleep through the night around 3-months-old, but their bladder is grown around 6-months-old.

REVISIONS:
*I use a CRATE to train with. It is the method I prefer, compared to other methods I have tried. I noticed that if they are in the crate, while I am doing chores, they are o.k., because the crate allows them to see me and be re-assured. The crate can also be a comfort when stored in the basement for dogs who live in areas where thunderstorms and tornados are an issue. . However, use the method that works best for you…..a laundry basket, a cardboard box, a woof-woof house, x-pen, child gates, whatever works for you.
*OUTSIDE, pee pad, litter box, whichever method you are using. When the puppy is first little, keep the pee pad, litter box near the food and water dish, so the puppy can eat and drink, and then go potty. You can move it away as they get older. The pee pad has a scent that smells and initiates potty. Sometimes a pee pad makes a sound that scares some puppies, so you might want to use a litter box if that happens. The pee pad allows a puppy to walk around, but a litter box keeps the puppy in one place.
*BEDROOMS, I use the bedroom and living room for training, because it works for me. Choose rooms that work for you, but watch for rooms that are damp, or drafty. While my puppies sleep in the bedroom during training, once they are trained, I let them sleep where they want to. They don’t have to sleep in the bedroom forever.
*TREATS. While I use treats for training, you don’t have to. I like Charlee Bears for training (a little cracker for a little mouth,) I use them for training, but once they are trained, I cut back on them.
*SOME PUPPIES will go potty in the same spot each time. Some puppies have to be told to go potty. A command like "go out" for pee, or "go finish" for poop, might work for you, keep saying “go finish” until the puppy poops. This is a good thing to train if you travel with your dogs. By using commands, the puppy won’t get confused when you are visiting someone, on vacation with you, or when you get to a new home. The command will tell them what you want them to do in an unfamiliar place. You might also want to use a leash method, so the puppy doesn’t sneak off, or for strange places.
*YELLING. It is not a good idea to "yell" or "spank" your puppy and then take them outside when they have an accident. They may get confused and think that going outside is punishment. While you want to correct them, if you are extreme, they may not want to go outside again. Shake it off, and resume your schedule. You have to keep it real. Puppies train at their own pace, but a puppy can only hold their potty for a few hours. A guide would be 1 hour for each month of age, plus 1 hour, so a three-month-old puppy should only be expected to hold their potty for 4 hours at most.

Pup diagnosed ADHD by vet, need some suggestions?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: interactive cat toys

Ok, I have a 17 week old pup…I posted questions when he was 7 and 8 weeks old. He is a Blue Heeler, Pug, Daschund, chihuahua mix, and at first I thought that his high energy came from the two working breeds in him plus the chihuahua…….WRONG! My dog is just challenged, anxiety disorder…can’t bear to be seperated from me for 5 minutes, submissive urination, excited urination..any type of urination, we got it! Nipping…lol, the dog has an entire toy box of chew toys, pig ears, rib bones…still prefers hands and fingers, pant legs, basically, PEOPLE! We have been doing the crate thing…he just pees in there and lays in it despite taking him out religiously, pulling up his water 3 hours before bed, pottying him right before going in the crate and taking him out during the night. He is on an all natural AND raw diet as to not put more chemicals into him that could trigger further ADHD symptoms. He also likes to chew carpet which for now has only been an area rug I have in the living room that is shag. He terrorizes the cats although he only tries to smell and lick them, they aren’t having it, and he chewed a hole in the side of my new couch. Now, before people start telling me that my dog is bored and not getting enough attention, this is a snippit of our day.

Two walks that are 3/4 mile in length each, during which time he attempts to put everything in his mouth from cigarette butts to chewing gum to trash. 3 hours a day of play, interactive play with me…things like fetch and tug are the norm….when the weather is nice we do this outside with him on a 45 ft tie out. That doesn’t include the time he spends outside after he pottys playing with leaves, grass and sticks. He manages to do some commands however briefly..sit, lay down ( which he is back up instantly), give paw, and he comes if I blow a whistle, rarely if I don’t.

I love this dog, getting rid of him is NOT an option, and I want to try other alternatives to meds since he is still so young and puppylike, but I need some guidance here….any suggestions would be welcome!
I have taken the pup to 2 different vets. After the first vet gave the diagnosis of ADHD, I thought she was nuts so I took him to another vet, didn’t tell the 2nd vet what the first vet said and he said the same thing. I did not even mention behavior problems at all, they were just able to see it in the dog. It may sound like puppy behavior in the post, but imagine puppy behavior 10 times worse, all of the time!

Obedience class is a must. Also, take him somewhere fenced in so you can safely let him off lead to run….ball field, bark park, empty pasture, etc….the boy needs a chance to run full out, willy nilly, everyday. Good luck!
