Unusual Siamese behaviours?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: unique cat toys

I’ve recently adopted a female calico cat. When I took her to the vet for her initial exam the vet commented that her face is very Oriental (i.e. angularity, shape of eyes, etc), although as a calico, she does not have the Siamese colourings.

I’d love to hear from Siamese owners about behaviours unique to the breed. I’ve never had a Siamese mix before and this cat is full of surprises.

For example, she is very attached to her toy mice and brings them to me to throw (and for her to retrieve) not unlike a dog. Her meow can be very distinctive at times as well ~ she sounds like a human infant crying sometimes. She is also very affectionate and likes to lie on me (as opposed to beside me or against me) when I am watching tv or relaxing. Finally, she tilts her head to the side when she is curious about something and often holds one or the other paw off the floor when doing so.

I’d love to hear from some Siamese owners out there.

I’ve had four Siamese through the years and find them to be quite charming. All of the ones I’ve had have been quite vocal and not shy at all about letting me know what they need/want. I’ve found them to be intelligent and they seem to become particularly annoyed when their routines are altered (more so than other cats I’ve had). I’m not sure whether it’s typical of the breed and I’ve had other cats do the same, but, every Siamese I’ve had has made it a habit to scratch the floor around their food dish when they’re finished eating. It’s an instinctual thing for many cats and is the house cat version of burying their prey to come back to later. Like I said, I’ve had other cats that have done this but I find it interesting that every Siamese I’ve had has done it. They’ve all been very people oriented and affectionate, although some have been more affectionate than others. I have one full Siamese and one mix now. My full Siamese follows me pretty much everywhere I go in the house. I can be certain that he’ll be in whatever room I move to within a couple of minutes. As far as cats go, I believe they’re wonderful companions all around.

Challenge:
My job is to design (and possibly build) a product of my choice. I want something unique that wasn’t on my teachers list any help please.

Here’s her list
-A recycled chair (design and build a chair for a dining room using recycled materials of your choice)
-An automated baseball catcher (design and build a machine that will catch a baseball pitched from 2 m away)
-An automated “goalie” (design and build a machine that will capture and store pucks as they are hit into a hockey net)
-A lightweight pack for hiking or biking (design and build a lightweight, collapsible pack that can be carried while cross-country cycling, hiking, or on a school field trip)
-A grocery cart to carry groceries home for people who do not have access to transportation
-A childproof container (design and build a container that an infant will not be able to open, but an adult will be able to open)
-A bookshelf to be stored in a kindergarten room or child’s bedroom, used to store toys, books, games, etc.
-An animal shelter to be used outside (i.e. a dog house or cat house)
-OTHER: Identify a need that hasn’t been met by other products and invent a new product to meet the need. (Check with the teacher first!)

Thanks guys

how about a bamboo bicycle or a cardboard bicycle?

how about a fold up walker that can be used to board an airplane for those needing help getting on a plane and don’t want to use a wheel chair. needs to fold up small enough to get under the seat and be very light. maybe using carbon fiber tubes.

New kitten, need help.?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: unique cat toys

I got a 8-10 week old British Shorthair kitten 2 days ago. A point to keep in mind before suggesting me any particular brand of pet stuff is that I live in Abu Dhabi, UAE (Dubai) and pets arent given much importance here. Theres just a small section in the supermarket that sells pet food, kitty litter, collars, brushes and other basic stuff. There arent many vets here either. But I took him to the vet and the vet said he’s ok.

So anyway, the kitten I bought: (in order of decreasing concern :P)

1- Hasnt pooed since he came here 2 days ago (its been about 50 hours) He’s been eating, drinking, peeing but not pooing. I tried rubbing the warm moist washcloth on his butt thing and rubbing my hand on his abdomen but none of it works. And vets are closed Friday, Saturday here and todays Saturday so I cant go to the vet till tomorrow, so it would be great if I could get her to poo today.

2- He eats only boiled chicken. I tried giving him whiskas moist kitten food as well as dry (which is the only brand of cat food here and theres Purina too) but he doesnt eat either. I tried mixing some of it with boiled chicken but then he wont even eat the chicken. And I’m not sure the chicken contains everything a growing kitten needs.

3- He’s not very playful. I’m not saying he’s lethargic, just not very playful. He sleeps most of the day. When he’s awake, he’ll walk up to you and sit beside you and climb into your lap and he looks fine but he wont play. I bought him a few toys including a catnip spring thing but he just stares at it and wont play with it. Maybe this is just his unique personality?

well, i think he hadn’t pooed yet because he is eating dry chicken!
That i advice you to go to a vet…i don’t think boiled chicken is good for a kitty, why not try to look up in books and try the homemade recipies there?
And question 3, its a kitten, it’s not a human! It doesn’t know what’s a toy, and what’s not.Try and encourage it..emmm..
how about you try and play with your kitty? like tug-of-war, or a game of catch?

How to take care of a special needs cat.?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: unique cat toys

We have a deaf juvenile cat who is a lot less curious than regular cats and depends on us (owners/roommates) to amuse him. We think that, because he can’t hear all these interesting sounds, his surroundings get boring for him after a while. This wouldn’t be that big of a problem if it weren’t for his meow. Really, it’s more of a scream or cry; since he can’t hear himself he meows A LOT louder than other cats. So, every time everyone has left the house or gone to bed, he becomes bored and spends hours meowing at earsplitting levels. It’s gotten nearly impossible to sleep, since you can hear the meow through headphones, earplugs, and those nighttime "soothing noise" machines. The only thing that keeps him amused when humans can’t pay attention to him are new toys, which he usually gets tired of within a couple of days (we now have a huge box of different colored/sized/textured balls), and we really can’t afford to keep buying him more, plus new toys should be reserved as a "treat". The vet didn’t have any helpful solutions, he just suggested we keep our doors open at night so the cat can come sleep with us and won’t feel neglected, but if you’re not moving he’s still bored and the meowing starts again as soon as he realizes you’re not going to get up and keep him company. And no, ignoring him didn’t work either, he can go for hours and we’re starting to fear that our neighbors might complain.

Anything along the lines of a shock collar is out (after all, if he can’t hear himself meow, he’ll have no idea why he’s being punished… it’s just evil). Has anyone else dealt with this unique set of problems? Is there a way to make him aware of how loud he’s being and/or keep him amused when the humans aren’t around?

One of the best things to do for a deaf cat is to get a hearing cat to keep your existing one company. Much of your cat’s miaowing will be to do with being a bit lonely. It will take some serious supervision and lots of patience to get them integrated, but it may well be worth it. I have seen hearing cats really look after a cat with a disability such as deafness or blindness Have a chat with a shelter about this, they may have a cat (must not be younger than your cat) who would fit the bill nicely and would adapt to living and helping out a younger deaf cat.

Cats are astonishingly sociable and often make great "carers" to other cats who have a disability.

I’m very glad that you have decided never to use hateful shock collars or any other device or punishment. Punishment is always cruel and unnecessary because animals only learn by reward and praise. All any type of punishment does is teach fear of more punishment.

Many will tell you to spray your cat with water - don’t do that either, it’s still punishment, it will really confuse your cat.

At night when everyone is sleeping, maybe you could rig up a sound activated night light, have the light in one of your rooms (low level light obviously so it doesn’t wake you up) and it could be set to come on when the cat miaows loudly. The cat would learn to come into the room, set up nice cosy beds and leave some toys out? Just an idea there.

Puzzle toys are great too, feeder spheres may be of use, where the cat has to play with the toy (roll it around) to get a reward of a piece of kibble. Track chasing toys might keep him amused too. Feeder toys made from carboard inner tubes of toilet roll, taped into a big pyramid, small pieces of kibble put in some of the rolls, may keep him occupied too, making play interesting for him.

This person has a blog trying to find homes for deaf animals and welcomes emails asking for advice, From what I have read of the blog (and the previous blog they had on the same subject) they are very knowledgeable. I tried googling on the subject and came up with a heap of sites that just recommended those bloody vibrating/shock collars.

The blog is: http://deafanimals.blogspot.com/

The email address is found if you click under the Contact Us section on the right hand side.

Thank you for taking on a cat with special needs.

What are some unique tricks I can train on my cat? How do I achieve them?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: unique cat toys

I’ve already taught me cat to sit up, lie down, come to a clicker but I’m wondering what else I can do. He’s a very anxious worker and always wants to do tricks. He loves toys, lasers and has a huge appetite which is a plus so are there any tips on tricks you can tell me?

Although some cats will respond to positive reinforcement, most cats generally do better if they are working for food rewards. If you use soft moist cat food or dry food as a treat, you will lessen the chance of disturbing a properly balanced diet. If your cat has performed a certain task you have asked of her, make sure you not only reward her with a food treat but with verbal praise as well.

You will have more success if you work with one command at a time. As with any kind of training you have to be consistent and let your cat work at her own speed. When you see even the slightest glimmer that your cat understands the behavior you are trying to teach, reward her enthusiastically. Here are a few you may want to try.

Shake Hands
With your cat sitting in front of you, touch her paw and say, "shake." As soon as she reacts and lifts her paw, shake it and give her verbal approval along with a treat. Remember to be consistent and repeat the command the same way each time.

Wave
Swiping at a morsel of food is a natural behavior for a cat. Hold a treat in your hand. Place it in front of the cat’s nose but just out of reach of her front paws. Then, move it back and forth with your hands in a waving motion while telling your cat to "wave." As your cat reaches out for the food, it will appear as if she is waving. Once her motion simulates the waving behavior, praise her and give her a treat.

Good luck with training your cat!
My cat is 9 years old. A pure white male. They tend to settle down more as the years go by. It’s harder to get him to play with me unless I have a laser pointer.
